DEATH

In this topic, our Learning Intention is to better understand what happens to our body when we die. This is a mini-biology unit! We will learn this information by watching an extract from a television show and then looking at an expert website.

ACTIVITY 9: Podcast

1. First, watch "Your Body: What happens when you die?" WARNING: This documentary describes (and shows) what happens to your body as you get old and die. It shows how your body changes biologically and what you can expect to happen to your body in your last minutes.

2. Go to the website, Death - The Last Taboo this website has been produced by the Australian Museum, and is really thorough.
You can spend 5 minutes familiarising yourself with the site.

3. Read the text at each of the following links, making some notes of key points of interest as you go:
What is death?
Signs of death
Defining death
Safety Coffins

4. Using GarageBand (or another audio-recoding application), record a 3 minute conversation (podcast) between you and a classmate, discussing what you have learnt about the biology of death from the video and the website. Some focus questions for the discussion could be:

  • How can a person have a 'good death'?
  • What is some of the interesting biological information about death?
  • How do doctors define death or know for certain that it has occurred?
  • What are some other interesting things that you've learnt about death so far in this course?

5. Your teacher will take a copy of your recorded conversation.
