In this topic, our learning intention is to better understand the responsibility of family members when someone has died. We will learn about the Law regarding these matters and also what happens to the body during this time. To do this, we will read some relevant literature and also visit a funeral home and the local cemetery.
ACTIVITY 11: THE LAW ABOUT DEATH & FUNERALS
The work from these activities (11 and12) should be completed in a Pages document, and uploaded to SIMON.
2. In a PAGES document, write a paragraph explaining any new learnings and insights you have through reading this information.
3. "When death occurs, a surprising amount of people don't know what to do". Give at least 3 reasons for your agreement, or disagreement with the this comment.
4. Select five main points from the material that you think every Australian should know and record these.
ACTIVITY 12: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BODY? First...watch this!...Ummm, and take notes (you might need to watch it through twice - he talks really, really fast)!
Continue on the same Pages document from Activity 11, and submit onto SIMON together.
Your task is to imagine that a friend of yours has had a relative die, and that they have no idea what needs to happen next. You have to explain what happens to the body before it is sent to the Funeral Home. They will need to know everything including:
Extension: Here's an article about Home Funerals (from America). Why do you think some families choose this option?
Activity 13: Funeral Home Visit & REFELCTION
Visiting a Funeral home can seem like a strange and even scary thing to do. We will be visiting the Tobin Brothers Funeral Home in Victoria. It is a good idea to have a look at their website before we go, as it provides a great deal of information about funerals, including information about how to plan a funeral and what to expect when you are grieving.
You will be able to have a look around and ask lots of questions from the Funeral Directors. Here are some things that you should know:
you will not see a funeral in progress.
you will not see the morgue
you can ask any respectful question about funerals that you would like to know about funerals or working in the funeral industry.
In this Blog Post, you can reflect on anything you learnt at the Funeral Home. You might like to write about preparations for funerals (and costs) or about what happens during a funeral service. If you did not attend the Funeral home visit, you can use the information on the Tobin Brothers website to write a report. In either case, the report should be 400 worlds.
And just to finish this bit, here's a great clip from the movie "Four Weddings and a Funeral", where a man reads a poem over his friend's coffin (please ignore the spelling of the word "funeral", which is wrong on the top of the clip!).
ACTIVITY 14: Cemetery Visit & BLOG
Your visit to the Cemetery will involve a tour by a member of the Cemetery Trust. These good people help keep the Cemetery in good condition, and also know a lot about the history of the cemetery and the people who are buried there. As you undertake the tour, don't be afraid to ask questions about how the cemetery operates, or the different types of funerals that are held there. At our local cemetery, we are lucky enough to have quite a variety of types of graves, and many significant historical items. Take some photos of the graves or experiences that most interest you, so that you remember them when you come back to class.
There are members of the public who read your blog who have never been to our local cemetery. BLOG for them a description of the cemetery and some of the features that stood out to you, some of the facts you learnt and maybe some interesting stories that they might find enjoyable! Your report on the cemetery should be at least 400 words.
ACTIVITY 15: PRIEST OR FUNERAL CELEBRANT VISIT
All being well, it is great to meet the people who will help you plan a funeral, should the need arise.
Priests conduct funerals.
Funeral Celebrants conduct funerals (there are both Religious and non-Religious celebrants).
Grief Teams work with Priests and Celebrants to help families prepare the Funeral.
Funeral Home workers can also help prepare the Funeral.
