Sick can help'?help those who face death respond with dignity and courage.
This week we will be looking at the notion and experience of dying and the Sacrament of "Anointing the Sick". Our Learning Intention is to better understand death as something we all experience and have to learn to cope with. We will do this by examining how the media portrays death and how we can make the experience of death easier to bear for everyone concerned. We will be using multi-media to explore and record our learnings.
In this short talk, a doctor shares some of his observations about death in Australia.

ACTIVITY 7: What is a Hospice?
ClassPalliative Care is the specialised medical care of those who are dying. It takes a special person to work in this area. Here's one person's story about being involved with a palliative care team.

Read the article A Good Death from The Age Newspaper (online edition). As a class, discuss what you believe the benefits of planning for your death with medical authorities might be, and how this can lead to "a good death" rather than a "bad death" (it is worth thinking about what the article means by those two terms). This article on Palliative Care, provides a slightly different perspective.
    Amazing Four Corners program...
Watch the Four Corners report "A Good Death" (aired on ABC on 8/2/10). Here is description about what the show covers. The DVD is in our College Library. Isn't it interesting that both The Age and the Four Corners used the same title for their stories? Why do you think this is?
Using the knowledge you have gained from the Newspaper article and television show "A Good Death" in your blog, write a Newspaper report called "Why choose to use a Hospice when you're dying?" (it should be a very up-beat, positive report). You could include an explanation of:

    Such assistance then
In planning and carrying out the funeral rites, the priest and all other ministers should keep in mind the life of the deceased and the circumstances of death. They should take into consideration the spiritual and psychological needs of the family and friends of the deceased and their sense of loss. Planning of the funeral rites can take place at an appropriate time after death and before the Vigil Service. Ministers are then given the opportunity to explain the meaning and significance of each of the funeral rites, especially the Vigil, the funeral liturgy, and the Rite of Committal.
If pastoral and personal considerations allow, the period before death may be an appropriate time to plan the funeral rites with the family and even with the person who is dying. This can help all come to terms with the reality of death and Christian hope.

    Preparations for the Funeral
The circumstances surrounding a loved one’s death can vary immensely. The very old person who peacefully and quietly died, the young child tragically killed in an accident. Suicide. A lengthy illness. No matter how death has taken place, the community of faith is called to console those who are grieving with words of faith and support and acts of kindness.

    ...
Catholics believe that there is life after death in that our Soul continues to journey onwards (Catholics also believe that our soul existed before our conception, so really, our soul has a long history, with a short experience in a human body on Earth). The understanding of Catholics is that after our death, we are judged (by God and ourselves) according to the life we have led, and that in response to that judgement, our soul continues to exist either in relationship with God (we sometimes call this "Heaven") or away from God (which is often called "Hell"). There is a third state (sometimes referred to as "Purgatory"), where the Soul is in a place of decision-making.
Most Catholics have a firm sense that their soul will be with God in "heaven". The Catholic Church bases its understandings of life after death from the teachings of the Bible, and that of the teachings of great holy men and women of history. Since Christians believe that God is active in the world through people, the teachings of wise leaders are believed to be inspired by God. If you would like to know more, there is a good article here
Here's a summary of What Catholic's believe about life after death! Note...it's designed for Year 12s, so you'll need to pause every now and then to take your notes.
